What is Alpha Phonics?

Alpha Phonics a specialized program for those school-aged students struggling with dyslexia. It is based on the research from Scottish Rite Hospital. We work primarily on the areas of reading, spelling and handwriting.

What is dyslexia?

According to the Texas Education Agency, dyslexia is:

" a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling abilities. These difficulties result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities."

Once a qualified child has been tested and admitted into the program, there are specific skills that are worked with. Primarily, these skills are:

-alphabet

-phonemic awareness

-graphophomemic knowledge

-fluency

-comprehension

-spelling

These skills are taught by a qualified instructor in an explicit, systematic, sequential and cumulative manner. Instruction follows a logical sequence that fits the nature of the alphabetic principal.
