THE ESL PROGRAM

ESL is short for English as a Second Language. Students who participate in ESL are considered second language learners, which means their first language is something other than English. Some of the students at Cox Elementary speak Spanish, Ibo, Arabic, Vietnamese, etc. (Languages and Cultures at Cox Elementary) As the ESL teacher at Cox Elementary, I work with students at every grade level to improve their understanding and mastery of the English language.

WHO PARTICIPATES?

When parents enroll their child in school, they must complete a Home Language Survey. This survey tells us if the student knows more than one language and which language they use most of the time. The ESL teacher will evaluate the student and determine the student's ability to speak, read, and write the English language. After such tests are performed, a meeting will be called with the LPAC committee to determine placement for the child. Children that qualify for ESL services will be placed in the ESL program and receive additional support from the ESL teacher.
