ESL
English as a Second Language

The ESL Program supports the learning which takes place in the students' homerooms. Additional Language Arts and English instruction is provided to help students be successful in all academic areas. Students are provided with opportunities to learn different reading methods to suit their learning styles. Students are also encouraged to use a variety of English writing styles.

ESL students learn English in a natural environment through hands on activities, songs, language games, books, role-playing activities, and real life experiences. Learning is enhanced through a low risk environment and smaller groups in their classrooms.

The ESL program advocates the continued use of the native language in the home, because we recognize it is an important part of the student's culture and identity. At school, we help students learn to fluently communicate in English.

You can help your child learn English by ...

A. Reading to your child every day. Have your child read to you, too!

B. Checking his/her homework everyday.

C. Having your child practice reading everywhere. Look at signs, labels, newspapers, and advertisements.

D. Taking your child to the library regularly.

E. Having your child listen to books on tape. Listening repeatedly will improve pronunciation and understanding of the text.

F. Providing educational TV time. A short period of time spent viewing educational programs will help students build vocabulary.

G. Encouraging your child to make friends with an English speaking child. Playing with peers will help your child to build confidence as he/she is learning English. The more opportunities your child has to play, the faster their English skills will improve!
