Adult men and women have different vocal cord sizes. Adult male voices are usually lower pitched and have larger folds. The male vocal folds are between 17 mm and 25 mm in length.

Matching the female body, which on the whole has less muscle than the male, females have smaller folds. The female vocal folds are between 12.5 mm and 17.5 mm in length.

Male and female children’s vocal cords are about the same size until they go through puberty; meaning that they will all sing at the same pitch. However during puberty, the male’s vocal cords will begin to lengthen and along with that the boys voice will start becoming lower in pitch. This happens at different times for every boy. For most it will happen late in their 6th grade year or early 7th grade. It is really important that boys continue to sing through this change in their voice.

Your body is your instrument! The main components are your larynx, also know as your voice box, and you lungs.

The larynx contain the vocal chords that along with a steady stream of air supplied by your lungs let you sing!
