English I Pre-AP Syllabus

Welcome to a new school year! This is an exciting time, and I cannot wait to get started. While this will be a challenging year for the students, it will also be filled with fun. I am eager to implement the curriculum that I have planned. This is an important year for the students. They will prepare for the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test and future Pre-AP and AP classes. Please review the following information. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to let me know.
This year, we will cover the following:
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) *students will need to obtain their own copy
Animal Farm (George Orwell) *students will need to obtain their own copy
1984 (George Orwell) *students will need to obtain their own copy
Romeo and Juliet (William Shakespeare) *students will not need to obtain their own copy
Mythology and portions of Homer’s Odyssey *students will not need to obtain their own copy
Selected Short Stories
Selected Expository Pieces
Poetry
Infused Writing, Grammar, and Vocabulary
TAKS Practice
Throughout the course of the summer, students should have completed Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. During the first week of school, the students will be tested over the book. Throughout the first six weeks of school, we will continue our analysis of the book.
The supplies needed for this year include a spiral notebook, 2-3 highlighters, pencils, blue/black pens, a loose-leaf binder notebook, and wide-ruled notebook paper. All students will need these supplies as soon as possible.
All students will be required to read each book as assigned by the Pre-AP curriculum. If a student anticipates failure to complete one or all of the books, he/she should withdraw from Pre-AP. No alternate assignments will be given.
The students will not be allowed to re-take tests, and no late work will be accepted. Please discuss this with your child, and be sure that he/she understands these procedures. If your child is falling behind in class, please be sure that he/she is attending tutorials. Tutorials will be a time for re-teaching.
You are my partner in your child’s education. Please feel free to contact me whenever you have questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Megan Maxwell
