Algebra 1

Fall 2008

Course Description: The course involves a study of the real numbers and their properties, the language of algebra, solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities, ratio, proportions and variations, polynomials, rational expressions, radicals and quadratic relations. The student will acquire a basic knowledge of the structure of Algebra.

 Course Outline:

            1st Six Weeks: Properties, Writing and Solving One-sided Equations, Writing and Solving Two-sided Equations, Proportions
                                    
and Inequalities

           2nd Six Weeks: Functions, Patterns, Expressions, Slope, Graphing Linear, Equations, Parent Graphs, Determining effect of changes
                                    
on slope and y-intercept

3rd Six Weeks: Writing Linear Equations using 2-points, 1-point, slope, and y-intercept, Scatter Plots (including calculator
                                     entry, Sketch the Line of Best Fit, Use Calculator to Write Line of Best Fit

 Supplies: Students are expected to have the following supplies available for use during each and every class period:

Ø      Organized Binder: Students may use a binder they have for another class but it should have dividers

Ø      Pencils (work is to be done in pencil)

Ø      Red Pen for checking work

Ø      Notebook paper and/or graph paper for binder notes and homework

Ø      Black and white composition book (not a spiral)

Ø      Yellow Highlighter

Ø      Ruler

Ø      If you would like to donate one or more items for your students to leave in our classroom it would be greatly appreciated: Kleenex, white board markers (for use with individual white boards), ream of white photocopy paper.

 Rules: All school rules apply inside and outside the classroom and will be enforced.

Ø      Come to class prepared

Ø      Respect others and their property.

Ø      OFF LIMIT AREAS: Teacher desk, Overhead projector, Cabinets, Phone, TV, Markers, Remote and Computer.

 Grading: Six weeks grade:

Ø      75% major grades. Major grades include tests and projects.

Ø      25% minor grades. Minor grades include graded homework, quizzes, daily work, and all other graded work. Quizzes may include problems taken directly from the homework. Missing homework or incomplete homework is not acceptable.

 Semester grades:

Ø      80% average of the three six week grades.

Ø      20% semester exam.

 Late Work: Work that is not handed in when due will be accepted up to 24 hours after the beginning of class with a penalty of 30 points (per student handbook). If a student repeatedly does not complete homework, detention will be assigned for the purpose of completing the missing assignments.

 Make up Work: Following an absence it is the Student’s responsibility to obtain make up work. A folder will be in the classroom for students to get missing assignments.  

 Homework/Classwork: Work is to be done in pencil. All work should be completed showing all necessary work including diagrams, sketches, formulas, etc. The answer must be highlighted with a yellow highlighter, circled, or boxed.  Name, class period, date assigned and the assignment details must be on the paper. 

 Retake Tests: To retake a test you must have completed all homework assignments, attend a tutorial session, then schedule a retake test time. I must know in advance when you will be taking the test. District Retake Policy will be followed. You will have one week from the date the test is given to take a retake or makeup test, regardless of absences. If a student is absent for the entire week following a missed test, the student will need meet with me the day they return to schedule a make-up test. 

Tutorials: You may receive help before or after school. You should have specific questions to ask and have attempted your assignment before coming to tutorials. You may do the following during tutorials.

Ø      Receive help with an assignment you missed due to absence.

Ø      Receive help with an assignment you don’t understand.

Ø      Receive help with a failed test prior to retake.

Ø      Take a retake/makeup test (see me first)

Ø      You must attend tutorials for at least 30 minutes to receive a late bus pass.
