BIRDHOUSE LESSON PLAN:
Objectives:
Construct two and three dimensional shapes
Find 5 facts about the Eastern Bluebird
Measure line segments in inches
Find the perimeter of figures
Find the area of rectangle shapes
Determine a way to find the area of a trapezium; solve
Construct birdhouse by following oral directions
Present birdhouse and projects to class
Purpose:
To increase student understanding of perimeter and area.
Materials:
Pencil
Poster Board
Scotch tape
Ruler
Scissors
Markers/colored pencils
Procedures:
Students will go to the library and research the Eastern Bluebird. Students must find 5 facts related to the Eastern Bluebird, and present these facts in a PowerPoint slideshow. Slideshow will consist of 6 slides – one cover slide, and then one slide for each fact. BE CREATIVE!
Students will measure, draw and label on their poster board the two sides, back, front, floor and roof of the birdhouse, using the dimensions provided on the blueprint they will be given. Teacher will guide the students when drawing the two sides.
Students will find the perimeter of each shape and write their findings in the table provided.
Student will find the area of the back, front, floor and roof, and write their findings in the table provided.
Students will get in groups, and brainstorm to determine the way to find the area of the two sides. Each group must clearly state the steps they took to find the area.
Students will cut out their shapes.
Students will decorate their shapes.
Students will assemble their birdhouses. Care should be taken to ensure that the edges line up as closely as possible.
Student will present their birdhouse and their PowerPoint to the class.
Student will turn in their birdhouse and their table.
Evaluation:
Students will be graded using Rubric provided. Students will receive three separate grades – one test grade for the completed birdhouse, one test grade for the PowerPoint presentation and one daily grade for the completed table.

EASTERN BLUEBIRD HOUSE |
|||||
|
Eastern Bluebirds are among the most popular song birds found in the Eastern United States. Ideal bluebird habitat is composed of mixed hardwood forest and open grasslands or meadows. Nest box should be placed 4 - 6 feet above ground on a post or pole. House should not be placed closer than 100 yards from another Bluebird house. Entrance hole should be oval shaped 1 3/8" wide X 2 1/4" tall, located 2" from the top. Clean out box after chicks have left and a second brood may be raised the same year. See below for details.
